Game Development Alumni

Writer: Kimberly RobertsKimberly Roberts

This year, I decided to push myself and be more involved within the university whilst staying on top of my coursework for my degree. So far, throughout my degree, I haven't really had the chance to properly work on video game based projects and make more connections within the video game industry. This being said, it led me to join the Video Game Development society available within the university. I have previously mentioned this society in a blog post, but I thought I would talk about an opportunity we were recently given by the society's president.

On Wednesday, the 8th of December, a guest speaker from a former student who is currently a software engineer at Sports Interactive. Throughout the talk, he gave details on how he got to where he is today whilst also giving us good advice, especially when things don't go to plan. Unfortunately, as this was taken place on a social media platform called "Discord", we couldn't record the session. Therefore, some stuff I've forgotten because it's been a week since the talk.

But I did ask how to stand out from the rest of the competition since the video game industry is becoming more competitive than ever. His response wasn't exactly the greatest because he came across as really nervous. However, he stressed the importance of making connections within the industry and how just being friendly can go a long way.

Even though the talk was short, it gave me hope for the future and how it's okay to not get the "dream job" right away as there is a lot of time to get that job. This being said, I think one of my main goals for next year is to connect more with people within the industry, primarily through LinkedIn, as that could help me have more opportunities available within the video game industry.
