Final Blog Post - Exhibition Progress

Writer: Kimberly RobertsKimberly Roberts

This will be my final blog post before this website is sent to be marked. I just wanted to thank anyone who has read my blog and visited my website. Hopefully, after this has been marked, I will be able to update this or create a new website post graduating from university documenting what’s to come in the future.

I am beginning to work on my exhibition project, in which I have previously discussed my ideas in a previous blog post about my sculpture based on my own characters called the “Krungles”. As I have mentioned a lot since creating these characters, they mean a lot to me due to their important message about sustainability. Though they don’t obviously portray this message as they are characters in my own video game concept, throughout the game, they subtly give hints to the audience that can influence them to help the environment more outside the video game.

Furthermore, this has been an ongoing development project since my second year, as I haven’t had a proper chance to explore the concept more due to other projects and time constraints. Not to mention I haven’t had the opportunity to explore a new skill, 3D modelling, because of the same reasons. Therefore, I would like to use this opportunity to display a new skill form whilst focusing on a project that I am passionate about. I still don’t know whether I will be creating other graphic design elements for the project yet, as I plan on speaking to Andrew in the following week. However, I know that I would love to incorporate VR elements into the exhibition to fully explore game development in a new light.

But first, I need to create the 3D models. After speaking to Chris and Drew on the matter, we agreed that I create five models by hand first and then 3D scan them to manipulate, texturise and animate them to be sent to Alex (from the Digital Bus) to be turned into VR models. This can allow me to learn Blender more and fully understand how the program works and is a stepping stone in learning how to 3D model.

At the moment, I don’t feel 100% confident in my modelling skills as an I am still new to this, and I felt after creating these five models they weren’t my best work. But looking on the bright side, I’ve realised it’s probably because they are not painted or finished. After all, they have been created to be scanned in. My perfectionism is coming into play again here, and I should remember more that they are not the final product. I would like to 3D print the finished models to have more physical work shown at the exhibition alongside the additional work that Andrew and I are yet to discuss.

Again, I would like to pour my heart and soul into this project and create something I am proud of and that people would be excited to interact with when at the exhibition. I feel like this could be a new experience for the audience because it’s not often you get to interact with artwork the way I would like people to do. I hope everything goes to plan as it is an ambitious project.
