Digital Bus & Augmented Reality

On 15th January, I assisted Kingsway in doing campus tours for students attending their interviews and answering any questions they could have about being a student at the University of Chester. Whilst on the tours, this bus outside the Kingsway building showcased new technology and facilities that will be coming to the university soon and how they can be applied to the creative arts.

Upon my curiosity, I investigated new technology they were experimenting with and learned more about their facilities. They were experimenting with all kinds of digital 3D modelling software, from 3D printing to VR. This piqued my interest because I wanted to learn 3D modelling and seek some advice from them about 3D modelling and where to begin. Throughout my time on the bus, I mainly spoke to someone called Alex, and we started talking about a lot of things to do with 3D modelling and augmented reality. He gave me a lot of advice on how to begin 3D modelling, and I also sent him some blender tutorials that he could experiment with. I even got a chance to play around with the VR and was 3D scanned with the available drone, which can be seen in the images below.

This was an exciting experience as it really inspired me to further develop my work by creating 3D models and possibly even making VR versions of my creations into gifs that the user could play around with using this technology. I'll be sure to experiment more with Blender within my own time whilst developing an idea for what to turn into VR.

Edit: When it comes to my exhibition piece, I thought I could revisit this idea of using the VR technology and possibly speak to Alex again about this when I have further developed my modelling skills. The plan would be, after the spring half-term, I would physically create base models of the Krungles characters and digitally scan them in and manipulate them further there. At this point, I would then be able to speak to Alex again about hopefully being able to turn them into augmented reality figures for the exhibition. This is rather ambitious of me to do, but I believe I could do it by providing no hiccups occur on the way and providing Alex or any of the 3D team aren't too busy.
