Caveman: Music Video - Creative Design Practice

Writer: Kimberly RobertsKimberly Roberts

Throughout the second component of Creative Design Practice, I created and developed my own personal projects. I was also a part of a group collaboration with Jess and Emma to produce, shoot, and edit a music video from start to finish for two music students. We were able to work on this brief due to Kevin speaking with the music department on whether anyone wanted a music video produced and edited to develop skills we wanted to work on, whether it be set design, media production or animation.

I plan to go into more depth about this project, particularly in the interface with the broader world section of my website, because I feel this project fits the criteria. After all, the project was being done on a large scale. In addition to that, because we hadn’t done a project like this before, it involved countless hours of planning, creating and re-takes for it to be a finished product that was up to a high standard and learning new skills we never thought we would at the beginning of this project.

I wanted to make a blog post about it, too, because I wanted a section of the website where you could view the video and talk more about my experience throughout the project a little bit more.

Although it did distract me from my main goal of focusing on 3D modelling, I enjoyed this project and don’t regret working on it. In fact, if I didn’t work on the project, I would have regretted that more. As it isn’t often you get to work on a project like this with your friends, I doubt I will get another chance to create a music video any time soon (due to my career aspirations in game design). Furthermore, it was entirely out of my comfort zone because it was such a new and different experience, significantly because I grew used to working independently due to the pandemic.

Again, even though this project was severally stressful, it allowed me to practice my animation skills as I have wanted to animate again since the motion design module. It was a fantastic opportunity to work on it more and practice again, as it is a skill I want to continuously work on. Though I wished some elements were better and weren’t so rushed (due to the deadline and other projects alongside this), I have more work to add to my animation reel to showcase more of my skills as a creative practitioner.

Finally, the last thing I would like to mention is that working on this project has piqued my interest in media production and learning more skills and methods within that pathway. I used to study film studies at a level, so to a certain level, I do enjoy media/film to a certain degree, but I didn’t really consider it as a pathway unless it was animation. Possibly in my free time, I could research and learn more about that industry. If I go down the route of being a freelance artist shortly after university, it could allow me to apply for several more job positions due to my having a more comprehensive skill set.
